Margarita Kotlyarova is a classical piano pedagogue and concert-trained musician with over 25 years of
extensive teaching experience. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, she began piano studies at the age of six
at the School for Gifted Children, Division of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. She later earned a
Master’s Degree in Music as a Piano Teacher, Concert Performer, Chamber Ensemble Soloist, and
Accompanist from the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg.
Her musical training reflects the highest traditions of the Russian piano school. She studied with
distinguished pedagogues including Serafima Olkhovsky, Victoria Bogdashevsky, Valery Vasiliyev (a pupil
of Heinrich Neuhaus), Yelena Shafran, Sofia Vakman, Bella Davidovich, Gregory Dinor, and Pavel
Serebryakov. She is a First Prize winner of the All-Russian Competition for Professional Musicians in St.
Petersburg.
Margarita has performed as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician in St. Petersburg and Moscow,
and served as an accompanist for the IV USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi.
She has held faculty positions at the State Music School and the School for Gifted Children in St.
Petersburg, the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and the Indian Hill Music School in Littleton, Massachusetts.
She currently teaches at her private piano studio in Needham.
Her teaching follows the ABRSM system and supports students from beginner through advanced and
diploma levels. Students study a rigorous repertoire including Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert,
Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, Rodion Shchedrin, and Slonimsky.
Under her guidance, students have earned top prizes at Massachusetts State and international
competitions, including the American Fine Arts International Competition, American Protégé International
Competition, Bradshaw & Buono International Competition, and the Nancy Oliva Prize, with performances
at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and other major venues. In 2017, Margarita received the Top
Teacher Award from Steinway & Sons.
Graduates of her studio have gone on to pursue professional music degrees at leading institutions
including Juilliard, Berklee College of Music, Eastman School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music in
London, Emory University, Wellesley College, Tufts University, Tulane University, and the University of
Michigan. Many have completed Master’s degrees in music. Others have gained admission to Ivy League
institutions including Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, and MIT.
In addition to pre-professional instruction, Margarita welcomes adult students, including complete
beginners, offering structured guidance from introductory through intermediate levels.
